According to GuideStar, there are over 17,000 non-profits in Los Angeles alone. Most of these organizations are in need of writing services for marketing purposes, campaigns, events, and any host of communication pieces. Working with a non-profit is a great way to build your portfolio while finding a sense of satisfaction in the work we do as writers.

In our quest for great music for the wedding, we stumbled upon one of the best kept secrets in town: gi-tahr, Pepperdine’s guitar concert series. On the second Tuesday of every month during the school year, the incredibly talented students from the Classical Guitar Program at Pepperdine, who are under the tutelage of Christopher Parkening, perform a free concert at Raitt Recital Hall. It is definitely worth the trip to Malibu.

For more information, including student bios, samples, and a performance schedule, please visit www.gi-tahr.com.

Los Angeles is a city that is comfortable with the term “independent contractor,” thanks to the large mechanism called the entertainment industry. Cast and crew are often hired on a temporary basis during production and then released to tackle the next project. Come tax time, many L.A. mailboxes are stuffed with 1099 forms.

We’ve all read the headlines about job lay-offs, foreclosures, and businesses struggling to survive. What we don’t see, are the numbers of independent contractors who are thriving right now. As a freelance writer in Los Angeles, it behooves you to take advantage of the abundance that this city has to offer. Not only are Angelinos comfortable with the concept of the independent contractor or freelancer, but our economy is ripe for this type of business relationship. It’s the perfect storm of opportunity.

We’ve picked our venue and I’ve ordered my dress, and now it’s all about the fun stuff–picking the food, the cake, the decorations, and all those goodies.  A couple of weeks ago, my trusty maid of honor and one of my bridesmaids joined me at a bridal fair.  What an adventure!

I was expecting a sea of pink meringue and got just about that.  DJ’s pumping music, girls trying on dresses, roses dyed blue (yes, blue!), hair pieces, liposuction offers, honeymoon travel vendors, and there was even a cosmetic surgery center giving out stress balls shaped like a breast (I grabbed one of those for my groom).

The piece de resistance for the afternoon was the cake dive–three girls diving into a cake in search of a diamond necklace.  Those girls took down not only the cake, but also the table it was on.  It was on the verge of getting really ugly when one lucky, soon-to-be bride yelped her victory cry and the crowd erupted in a loud squeal.

In the end, I’m glad we went.  I did accomplish a few things–got registered, found info on tux rentals, and got to see some of the NFL playoffs in the Direct TV area set up for the grooms-to-be (why do the guys always get the good stuff?). Stay tuned for more to come!

Welcome to The Word, The Write Approach blog.  It’s been a long time coming, but it’s finally here.  There’s a lot going on over here and I can’t wait to see how it all unfolds.

Some things to expect from this blog are info on writing, being a freelancer, tidbits and information, tricks of the trade, resources for writers, tips and tools for writers, information for clients, opportunities for writers and clients such as grant RFPs and other goodies!  I plan to also add some guest bloggers as well!

In addition to the nitty gritty of the writing of business, I will also be writing about my so-called crazy life!  With a wedding in the mix there’s sure to be a post or two about that.  I may bring you along on the wedding planning express.  I will also be blogging about things I love or think are worthy of sharing.

So, check in often, follow The Write Approach on Facebook and Twitter (links to the right), and don’t forget to subscribe to my articles on Examiner.com.  If I have worked with you, please be sure to add your testimonial to the site.  Your feedback is so very important!
